Tips on Vegetable Container Gardening
Fresh picked vegetables not only taste the best but have the most nutrients; exactly what most
people expect from a vegetable. Container gardening is the perfect solution for those who believe they do not have
space to enjoy a vegetable garden, providing optimal harvests in a small area.
It is proven that vegetables begin to lose valuable vitamins and nutrients shortly after they are plucked from the
vine. While improved packaging and transportation have greatly enhanced the availability of fruits and vegetables
in their bins and shelves, much of their nutrition value as well as the flavor has already dissipated between the
harvest and the time the individual consumes them. In some cases involving exotic foods, we as consumers may have
to settle for these depleted items and may never know the difference. When considering the vegetables we normally
eat on a daily basis, however, there is a choice: growing our own fresh harvest. Peas, green beans, beets, onions,
broccoli, tomatoes, peppers, corn; the list of possibilities go on and on. It is not only healthier to eat freshly
picked foods, but also much more economical.
Many people look ruefully at their small, cramped yards and wish they had room for a garden.
Vegetable container gardening is the answer, even for those who have no yard space whatsoever. A container occupies
little space, and can be placed on a patio, a deck or even indoors near a sunny window. With containers available
in every shape and size, it is easy for anyone to plan their potted gardens according to the space they can spare.
The first step will be to decide which vegetables you wish to grow. Calculate how many containers you are able to
use in the space you have available. The garden can be started by either planting seeds easily found in department
stores and garden shops, or by purchasing starter plants. Vegetables require sunny conditions to thrive, so be sure
to place the containers in areas that will receive 6 to 8 hours of sun unless otherwise directed. Providing
adequate water and fertilization for the plants will help to produce bountiful yields of vegetables for your
table.
Growing your own harvest by vegetable container
gardening will provide you with healthy, nutritious and delicious foods that you will be proud to serve to your
family. No matter how much space you have available, everyone can enjoy the fresh harvest through growing in
containers.
